Overview & History

Swathi Thirunal College of Music, located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is one of India’s most prestigious institutions dedicated to the study of Carnatic music. Established in 1939 by Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the then Maharaja of Travancore, the college was originally known as The Music Academy. The primary vision was to promote classical music with a focus on the compositions of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, a royal composer and music patron of the 19th century.

In 1962, the institution was renamed as Swathi Thirunal College of Music to honor the legacy of the illustrious composer. Over the years, it transitioned from a royal initiative to a government-run college affiliated to the University of Kerala. The college continues to function under the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala, and stands as a cultural landmark of the state.

Mission & Growth

The mission of the college has always been to preserve, disseminate & develop the classical traditions of South Indian music. It began primarily to teach & promote the kritis (compositions) of Swathi Thirunal but expanded its academic scope by including a broader repertoire of Carnatic music, theory, performance, & research.

In the early 1960s, a panel of eminent musicologists & performers including Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Musiri Subrahmanya Iyer, & P. Sambamoorthy helped to restructure the curriculum. This laid a strong academic foundation & brought national recognition to the college.

Academic Standards & Courses

The college offers structured programs aimed at producing skilled vocalists, instrumentalists, & composers in Carnatic music. Courses include:

Specializations are available in Vocal, Violin, Veena, Mridangam, & Bharatanatyam. The programs are designed with a balance of theory & practice, integrating both classical texts & modern pedagogy. The college also provides certificate courses & continuing education programs for advanced learners & teachers.

The legacy of the college is deeply rooted in the contributions of its great faculty. The first principal was Muthiah Bhagavatar, a legendary composer & performer. He was succeeded by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, whose vision helped institutionalize the music training system. Over the decades, the institution has been led by renowned figures such as G.N. Balasubramaniam, Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma, Vechur Hari Hara Subramania Iyer, among others.
