The K. R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science & Arts (KRNNIVSA) was established in 2014 as an autonomous, training-cum-research centre in film and audio-visual technology, conceived under the auspices of the Government of Kerala | Wikipedia | krnnivsa.edu.in. Named after Shri K. R. Narayanan, the former President of India, the institute reflects his ideals of intellectual rigor and social equality.

The institute was officially inaugurated on 11 January 2016 by the then Vice-President of India, Shri M. Hamid Ansari. The campus, nestled in the serene hamlet of Thekkumthala in Kottayam District, spans around 12 acres, offering students a peaceful environment for immersive learning | Justdial.

Vision, Mission & Academic Standards

KRNNIVSA functions as an innovative venture in professional film and audio-visual training and as a research centre of international standards, established by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala.

Its Vision is to become a global institute of audio-visual aesthetics, serving as a multidisciplinary centre of excellence in visual science and arts, integrating entertainment, education, information, and technology to enrich human experience.

The Mission focuses on designing and delivering cutting-edge academic courses in cinema, television, digital arts, performance, design, and contemporary art; growing as an international research centre; and upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.

KRNNIVSA also holds full membership in CILECT (The International Association of Film and Television Schools) — it is the only institute in Kerala and among just five in India to earn this distinction, underlining its commitment to global education standards. According to CAPA, the institute was founded in 2014 and received its CILECT membership in 2018 CILECT.

Academic Programmes & Facilities

KRNNIVSA offers three-year, full-time postgraduate diploma programmes across six key disciplines:

• Editing
• Audiography
• Animation & Visual Effects
• Acting

Each programme admits 10 students, ensuring focused, hands-on training | @mathrubhumi.

The institute boasts a variety of state-of-the-art facilities, including:

• Classroom theatres
• Separate boys’ & girls’ hostels
• Colour correction suite
• 4K preview theatre with surround-sound mixing
• A purpose-built acting studio (6,255 sq. ft.) with a wooden floor, serving as an acting studio

Governance & Key Appointments

The institute’s governance includes a Governing Council, chaired by the Chief Minister of Kerala, with the Education Minister of Kerala as Co-Chairperson, supported by distinguished members; additionally, there’s an Academic Council comprising film and television industry professionals.

Noteworthy appointments include:

• Chairman: In February 2023, veteran filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza was appointed chairman, succeeding Adoor Gopalakrishnan | Onmanorama | Kerala Kaumudi.
• Director: The current director is Jijoy P. R., a seasoned actor and academic associated with FTII, Pune.

In short, Established in 2014 and inaugurated in January 2016, KRNNIVSA represents a landmark initiative by the Government of Kerala to foster nationally and internationally standardized education in visual science and arts. Nestled in a tranquil 12-acre campus at Thekkumthala, Kottayam, the institute provides a serene, immersive learning atmosphere.

KRNNIVSA’s vision and mission aim to meld creativity, research, ethics, and high professionalism—its full membership in CILECT (acquired in 2018) cements its international credentials.

Academically, it offers six specialized three-year postgraduate diploma programmes, accepting only 10 students per programme, thereby delivering intimate, hands-on training. Students engage with world-class facilities—shooting floors, 4K theatres, and acting studios—blending theoretical insights with practical execution.

Governed by an influential council and guided academically by industry stalwarts, the institute’s leadership includes Saeed Akhtar Mirza (chairman) and Jijoy P. R. (director), both distinguished figures in film and education.
